SUMMARY:Qatra Session 2: What's Race Got to Do with It?
DESCRIPTION:Race\, racism\, prejudice. These words fill our newsfeeds\, but what do they mean and how do we unpack their consequences? Is race biological or a social construct? This session will offer a brief history of the social and legal construction of race and help broaden what we mean when we use the term. Race and racism helps capture the experience of many groups\, including Black\, Indigenous\, Latinx and Muslim Americans. Knowledge is power. This interactive session will help us consider how to broaden our conceptualization of race as we discuss lenses like critical race theory as an important tool in movement building\, and understand what these conversations mean for Afghan-Americans especially. \nJoin ADEP on August 12 for the second installment of our Qatra Sessions! The Qatra Sessions are workshop webinars that cover a range of social justice issues\, and will culminate in a Leadership Retreat devoted to engaging mobilizing community members around the issues we are discussing. \nBe sure to tune in and see Ridhwan and Nura Sediqe discuss the issues at hand\, how they have arisen\, and the overarching connections between the plights and injustice that are disproportionately affecting marginalized communities in the United States.

SUMMARY:A Year into Trump: Afghan-American Discussion Space (SoCal)
DESCRIPTION:The Afghan Diaspora for Equality and Progress (ADEP) is providing a space for our community to come together to actively engage and strategize a year after 45 was sworn in office. \nLast year we worked with the Afghan-American Conference to address some of the issues resulting from the 2016 Election. What does this mean for our families? How did we get here? How can I get involved? Most importantly\, what’s next? There has been no greater need for support and frank conversations in our community than now. \nNow with the midterm elections around the corner\, ADEP is hosting regional safe space sessions in cities nationwide. These intimate conversations are a chance for us to process our emotions\, provide support for each other\, and find a way forward together. Please join us for this discussion. \nThis event is open to all Afghan-Americans\, young and old. However\, due to limited space\, please RSVP and let us know if you are bringing friends. \n*ADEP safe spaces will be held in Washington\, D.C. and the Bay Area. Please message us if you are interested in hosting a safe space in your region or have any questions.
