ADEP COMMENT ON DHS’S NEW POLICY OF SEPARATING FAMILIES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 6/19/2018

Washington, D.C. — The collective organizing staff of ADEP condemns the actions of the Trump administration and ardently opposes the immoral and unjust detention of immigrant families and the separation of children from their parents. Humans and cages do not belong in the same sentence. We call on our Congressional representatives to take swift action to discontinue the dehumanizing immigration policies that have plagued this country.

As an organization, we recommit ourselves to supporting immigrant communities and asylum-seekers. We recognize that no human being is illegal and especially denounce the placing of young innocent children in cages. We call on members of our community to join us in collective action to defend immigrant families. We recommend the following:

  1. Call Your Representative. You can call on your own or hold phone banking with your friends. Let your Congressional representative know that you oppose the Trump administration’s policy and demand they make a statement against the demonization of immigrants and introduce legislation to protect families. How to find your Congressional representatives and their contact information: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members.
  2. Join a local protest. Immigration activists have called for a nationwide protest on June 30th. Look up your location and join to disrupt, resist, and raise your voice against injustice. Find out more at http://familiesbelongtogether.org.
  3. Attend the Summer Leadership Initiative. In light of recent events, we will be dedicating our annual Summer Leadership Initiative to activating and mobilizing a registration and get out the vote campaign for the midterms that centers immigration. Learn more at http://adeprogress.org/action.
