WASHINGTON D.C. — The Afghan Diaspora for Equality and Progress (ADEP) issued the following statement in response to reports of detentions of Iranians and Iranian Americans at the border.
ADEP is deeply troubled by reports that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is detaining Iranians and Iranian Americans at the border between Washington state and Canada. We ask CBP to provide full transparency in regards to any discriminatory directive or policy as it pertains to Iranians and Iranian Americans at points of entry. These actions are reminiscent of historically bigoted enforcement policies and Trump’s Muslim ban enacted in 2017. ADEP calls on Congress to pass the NO Ban Act (HR.2214/S.1123), ending faith-based discrimination against immigrants and refugees from majority Muslim countries. As refugees and children of Afghan refugees aware of the devastation of war, we stand in solidarity with Iraqis, Syrians, and Iranians who continue to bear the brunt of conflict and increased surveillance. ADEP remains committed to peace-based ends to conflicts worldwide.
