ADEP CALLS FOR HATE CRIME CHARGES IN ATTACK ON AFGHAN FAMILY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 12th, 2020

WASHINGTON D.C. — The Afghan Diaspora for Equality and Progress (ADEP) issued the following statement in response to an incident in San Diego:

Various media reports describe a troubling incident from February 26th involving a man named Robert Compton threatening to kill an Afghan refugee family, telling them “to go back to where you came from” and injuring the father of the family. This incident greatly worries us; we call on San Diego authorities to file hate crime charges against Mr. Compton. In a period of increased hostility and bigotry towards refugees, it is essential we take a stand as a community.  We condemn the right wing’s hateful rhetoric against all marginalized communities and stand with any victims of hate, xenophobia and Islamophobia. We remain undeterred in our fight.
