Afghan-American Organizations Condemn Deadly Funeral and Maternity Hospital Attacks in Afghanistan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 12, 2020

We are angry. We are grieving. We are praying, yet again, for the lives lost to senseless violence.

Innocent lives lost at a funeral ceremony in Nangarhar.

Innocent lives, including 2 newborn babies, lost at a maternity clinic in Kabul.

During the sacred month of Ramadan, in the midst of a pandemic, and two days after honoring our mothers, families are left devastated and our diaspora mourning once more.

We are frustrated and outraged that our Hazara and Shia brothers and sisters, and other marginalized communities continue to face the brunt of this violence.

We are frustrated that rural areas of Afghanistan are often targeted by the ongoing conflict, and yet don’t receive the same attention as more populous urban centers.

This is not the first time these communities have suffered and they should be given the protection they need.

The Afghan-American Conference, The Samovar Network, The Afghan Diaspora for Equality and Progress, and Afghan-American Women’s Collective condemn these cowardly acts and stand in solidarity with our people in Afghanistan. We encourage the community to dedicate a moment of silence, prayer, and reflection this evening to the lives lost. We furthermore encourage and call on all parties to implement a full and immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
